Some great movies I have seen over the last month that I’d recommend: Spartan, Secondhand Lions, Big Fish, The Magdalene Sisters.
Spartan a David Mamet film with Val Kilmer is a twist and turns thriller about a kidnapping, but more clever than your average fair. Mr Mamet is arguable my favorite director/writer and if you haven’t seen The Spanish Prisoner, Heist, or State & Main or even The Winslow Boy and House of Games do yourself a favor.

Secondhand Lions and Big Fish are old fashioned Frank Capra kinda of film and their just so good. Both deal with father and son themes in new ways. I’d be surprised if anyone could fault with these. Big Fish is a Tim Burton movie so you know it’s going to be a bit strange but in that lovable way.

The Magdalene Sisters is shocking and disturbing but also engrossing like a car crash, you just have to look. It’s about girls in Ireland who were basically imprisoned by Catholic nuns and became slave labor, because they had a child out of wedlock or someone was just concerned they might stray that direction! This went on until 1996 but the movie takes place in the 60’s and is based on real lives of three women. The movie is a dramatized version of the a documentary Sex in a Cold Climate and my DVD had that little goodie too! The Catholic church has not suffered nearly enough for it cumulative sins over the ages in my humble opinion.

I liked Spartan ! Are you a NetFlix’er ?
btw, like the site !
