Apple announced today they settled a class action law suit brought by disgruntled Ipod owners with failing batteries. I’ll bet there are a lot of people hearing this news report that have been considering an MP3 player purchase. Are they going to run to the Apple Store now? Do they have any idea that this applies to Ipods 3 product generations ago? No - all they hear was batteries were supposed to last - but didn’t, and Apple got caught screwing its customers
All Apple is giving these poor owners is a $50 gift certificate or an extra year of Apple Care service contract. That’s cheap. Can Apple possible justify the loss of good faith and bad press versus the cost of having just done right by these owners in the first place?
I’ll bet it has a lot to do with being held to the fire by Wall Street. It seems like well run private companies have more leeway to make good when things go wrong.
If Microsoft screws me it’s all just par for the course. I’ve come to expect it. I never buy a Microsoft product because I want to, I buy it cause I have to. Not the same with Apple, where I relish spending my dollars with them. I love Apple and their products so this is just like getting the shaft from your best friend.
